Pollen Tube Growth in Style of Hibiscus syriacus L . after Self - and Cross - pollination between Self - incompatible , Self - compatible , and Sterile Groups

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the pollen tube growth in pollinated styles of Hibiscus syriacus L. after crosses between different self-incompatibility groups. Pollen tube growth in the style was observed 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 hours after self- and crosspollination between self-incompatible and cross-compatible I group plants, self- and crosscompatible C group plants, and self- and cross-incompatible S group plants.
Observations of pollen tube growth after pollination between different groups coincided with the result of diallel crosses. Pollen tube growth of the incompatible pollinations were inhibited in the style, 2/3 from the stigma to the base, at 9-12 hours after pollination, otherwise that of compatible crosses reached to the base. Especially, the pollen tube growth were inhibited after crosses between two plants classified into the same self-incompatible and cross-compatible I group, which show having the same S-allele.
The pollen tube in styles of group S plants reached to the base at both self- and cross-pollinations, indicating that the incompatibility phenomenon occured at ovary in this S group.
